How do I choose a blog topic that will last?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerPick a topic you can write about for years, that has real questions people ask, and that you can explain in your own voice. Test a few ideas with short posts before you commit.

Look for durable interests

Topics that last usually connect to a problem people keep facing, such as saving money, learning a skill or caring for a hobby. Trends can spike and fade, but everyday needs keep coming back. Ask yourself whether you could write fifty posts on the topic without running out of ideas.

Your own experience matters too. You do not need to be an expert in everything, but you should be willing to learn in public and explain what you find. Readers trust writers who show their process.

  • Choose ongoing needs over short trends
  • Check that you can list many post ideas
  • Be willing to keep learning
  • Write in your own voice

Test before you commit

Write three or four short posts on different angles of a topic. Watch which ones draw readers and which ones keep people reading. Use those results to narrow your focus.

Look at what others already cover. If the top results are all huge sites with thin pages, there may be room for a more specific, helpful take.

  • Test three or four angles
  • Watch which posts keep readers
  • Look for gaps in the top results

Common mistakes

  • Picking a topic only because it seems popular right now.
  • Choosing a topic so broad that you cannot build authority.
  • Giving up after a few weeks before any content has time to find readers.
