How do I get comments on my blog?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerAsk open-ended questions at the end of your post and respond quickly to every comment. Make commenting easy and show that you value the discussion.

Encourage conversation

End your post with a specific question that invites readers to share their experience or opinion. Instead of 'What do you think?', ask 'What's one tool you can't live without?'

Reply to comments promptly—within a few hours if possible. When readers see you're engaged, they're more likely to join in.

Make commenting user-friendly

Use a comment system that doesn't require a login (like Disqus or native WordPress comments). Avoid forcing readers to create an account.

Turn off moderation for first-time commenters if spam isn't a big issue, or use a spam filter like Akismet. The faster a comment appears, the more likely others will comment too.

  • No mandatory sign-in
  • Clear comment box
  • Reply to every comment
  • Highlight top comments
  • Close comments after a set time? (optional)

Promote discussion elsewhere

Share your post in communities and ask a question there. Sometimes a comment on social media can be turned into a blog comment if you invite the person to elaborate on the post.

Guest posting or being interviewed can also drive comments if you mention the discussion.

Common mistakes

  • Not responding to comments, which kills future engagement.
  • Making readers jump through hoops to comment.
  • Writing posts that don't invite a response (e.g., pure news).
